Time for a Texas food recap! If you’re local to Texas, looking to travel there, or in search of some good food, this is for you. I spent my spring break in Galveston, TX, and now I’m going to share all the best spots with you.
My Favorite Spots
Tacos
We all know that I’m a huge fan of tacos, nachos, and margaritas. To say the least, I was excited to come to Texas. I started off the trip getting some tacos at a local late-night food truck. Little did I know that food trucks were so popular here! I had Al Pastor and Pollo tacos, and they were amazing. So much flavor and you could tell how fresh they were.
My new favorite spot for tacos in Texas has to be Fish Company Taco in Galveston. They’re a local company who specialize in fish tacos made with the freshest ingredients. I had the Baja Taco with fresh cod, house made salsa, lime crema, Mexi-pickles, and cilantro. My second taco (the best one) was the Dirty South with shrimp, pimento cheese, corn relish, lime crema, and a potato chip. Honestly, that was the best taco I’ve ever had in my life and I’m not kidding.
What I also love about this place is that on Saturdays, they make homemade bagels, and Sundays they have chicken and waffles (pictured below). The best part is that the chicken and waffles are gluten-free! They’re made with corn meal and a spiced maple syrup for an extra kick. This was actually my first chicken and waffle experience, but it won’t be my last. The only bummer is that they’re only open on the weekends, so I couldn’t eat their tacos everyday (sad).
More Eats & Drinks
Texas BBQ
I couldn’t make it to Texas without some barbecue! We hit up Pennie’s Tex Mex Takeout, which happened to be around the corner from my cousins house. This tiny family-owned shop has been featured in The Texas Bucket List and Texas Chronicles for their world class BBQ and tamales. We had the brisket, ribs, barbacoa, and tamales, and they were absolutely incredible. As soon as you walk into the spot, you can just smell the flavors and get excited.
Whataburger
I couldn’t go to Texas without trying Whataburger. This was my first time trying it, and honestly I was underwhelmed. I’m a huge burger gal, but this just didn’t live up to my expectations. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but it reminded me a lot of McDonald’s. Probably wouldn’t go again, but it was fun to experience!
Drinks
Lots of fun drinks and happy hours were consumed on this trip. I started off with a frozen margarita at Murdoch’s, which is one of Galveston’s most historic buildings on the Seawall. Another great drink spot is Daiquiri Time Out, or DTO. I stopped there for happy hour and had the Zombie, which is rum, passionfruit, pineapple juice, lime juice, lemon juice, and turbinado. The cool part is that the drink actually comes to you with the lime and pineapple on fire! You blow it out and allow all the caramelized flavors to infuse into the drink.
If you’re looking for a cool place to sit and get some work done, the Proletariat Gallery & Public House is awesome. It’s a 1980’s restored loft turned into a coffee house with apartments above. Super cool vibes, really spacious, and a great menu selection for coffee, tea, snacks, and even happy hour!
Another drink I got into was Topo Chico’s. This is a sparkling mineral water from Mexico that is specific to the south. It was so delicious and refreshing, and perfect to have with tacos. My cousin also made me a drink with a Topo Chico, tequila, and lime, which was SO good.
The Grand Finale
And finally, we can’t forget about the best. Drag brunch.
My cousins surprised me with a drag brunch, which is always something I’ve wanted to go to. We went to Bar Boheme in Houston, which is known for having drag brunch every Sunday. They have an amazing outdoor seating area featuring a bar and brunch buffet. You can also order off the menu, but their buffet is special to Sundays.
The buffet featured amazing options like empanadas, biscuits, hash browns, barbacoa, french toast, churros, tortillas, and so much more. For drinks, I had an espresso martini and mimosas. Food aside, the whole event was amazing. It was such a fun time with lots of laughs. There were a lot of birthdays and bachelorette parties happening, so I definitely recommend it for that!
If you’re looking to make the trip out to Galveston, I highly recommend. Lots of hole in the wall restaurants with amazing and authentic cuisine. You can’t go wrong!
xoxo
