The Best Turkey Tacos

Jump to Recipe

Are you a fan of Taco Tuesday?! If so, these turkey tacos will be your new go-to! My family and I make these at least once a week and never get tired of them. They are so easy to make and come together in less than 30 minutes. We LOVE a quick meal. Plus, they’re gluten-free and dairy-free! Everyone in the family is going to love this one.

Whenever I make this recipe, I usually just end up eyeballing the ingredients. I finally measured everything out so I could share the goodness with all of you! What I love most about this recipe is that you can tailor it to your liking. If you’re not a fan of spice, you can add less taco seasoning, or add more if you like things really hot. Either way, these turkey tacos will be a hit!

What Ingredients Do I Need?

As I said earlier, these turkey tacos are so easy to make and take less than 30 minutes! Here is everything you’re going to need:

  • Ground turkey meat
  • Sweet onion
  • Mild jarred salsa (I use Tostitos Mild Chunky Salsa)
  • Olive oil
  • Taco seasoning (I use the one from Trader Joe’s)
  • Chili powder
  • Salt & Pepper

Ingredient Swaps

If you don’t have all of the ingredients to make these turkey tacos, there are some simple swaps you can make. I also have a Vegan Taco recipe you can make if you’re eating plant-based.

  • Ground turkey –> Ground beef or chicken
  • Sweet onion –> Any type of onion
  • Mild salsa –> Medium/hot salsa or homemade salsa
  • Taco seasoning –> You can make homemade taco seasoning or add more/less depending on your flavor preferences.

How to Make the Turkey Tacos

All you need to prepare these turkey tacos are a large skillet, a wooden spoon or spatula, and all of the ingredients mentioned above.

Start by dicing up your onion into small pieces. Heat the olive oil in the pan over high heat and sauté the onions until fragrant and slightly translucent.

Once the onions begin browning, add in the ground turkey meat. Cook until it has browned and there is no more pink. After the turkey has cooked, I like to drain the meat and onions to remove any excess liquid from the pan.

Now that the turkey and onions are cooked, all that’s left to do is to add the salsa and seasonings. Once everything is combined, I like to cover the pan with a lid and allow the turkey meat to simmer on low heat for a few minutes. The longer the better! This allows all the flavors to come together and makes the tacos taste even better.

Ways to Serve

My favorite and one of the best ways to serve this turkey taco meat is in tacos (obviously). My family and I love the Stand ‘N Stuff Taco Shells from Old El Paso. They work really nicely with the meat and allow you to add a lot. I also love the Cauliflower Tortillas from Caulipower which are gluten-free.

If you don’t have taco shells on hand, there are still so many ways you can enjoy this turkey taco meat! Here are some of my personal favorites:

How to Store Leftovers

If you have any leftovers, I recommend storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh in the refrigerator for 5 days, or you can prep this ahead of time and freeze it for up to 6 months.
